MP’s Disco Top 15 Part 4 (1987 The Evolution of Rhythm)

The Beat Goes On: MP’s Disco Top 15 Part 4 – The Late ’87 Evolution

The summer heat might have faded, but the dancefloor was just heating up. Welcome to the sophisticated side of the 80s. Part 4 of the legendary mixtape series takes us deeper into the groove, capturing the moment when Disco matured into R&B and the earliest beats of New Jack Swing began to take over.

If Part 3 was about the holiday party, MP’s Disco Top 15 Part 4 is the sound of the serious clubber. This is the music that defined the transition from the mid-80s pop explosion to the urban beats of the late 80s.

This mix is a masterclass in rhythm. It opens with the unmistakable energy of Whitney Houston’s “So Emotional,” a track that filled floors instantly. But listen closely as the mix progresses. You’ll hear the polished, funk-driven basslines of Alexander O’Neal and Earth, Wind & Fire seamlessly blending into a tougher, street-smart sound.

By the time the tape hits the second half, we are witnessing the birth of a new genre. Tracks by Full Force and Keith Sweat introduce the “swing” beat that would dominate the next decade. It’s a sonic snapshot of a musical revolution, preserved perfectly on chrome tape.

Turn up the bass and let the memories flow.

  • DJ Bio: Marko got infected by the music virus at a young age, listening to the top 40 and Ferry Maat’s soul show. He played school parties at 12 years old, was a DJ at a pirate radio station, started playing in discos at 16, and got booked for his first international gig at 17 years old. His passion for telling a story and his ambition of taking the audience on a journey does not make him the most accessible, but more of an acquired taste. His mix tapes became quite popular both in Holland and abroad. Now through the magic of the Nakamichi, we can enjoy those sounds again like they were recorded yesterday.
